Dr Ben Carson
Pediatric neurosurgeon, politician, commentator, philanthropist
Dr Carson became the head of Johns Hopkins pediatric neurosurgery in 1984. He was one of the youngest doctors to ever hold that title in the US and is also known as the first doctor to successfully separate twins conjoined at the back of the head, among other successful first surgeries. After his retirement in 2013 he shifted his career into politics. He wrote books and articles, joined the Fox News Channel as a contributor and eventually made a bid for President in the 2016 election. He did not win, but did become the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Donald Trump.
Renee Amoore
Nurse, businesswoman, politician, professor Renee graduated from the Harlem Hospital School of Nursing and started her career in the emergency room of Harlem Hospital. After earning a master's degree in administration, she was hired by various organizations, eventually becoming the vice president and COO of Growth Horizons. In 1992 Renee was elected to the PA Republican State Committee and then became its deputy chair in 1996. In 1995 she founded her own health care management and consulting firm. She taught at several schools, became a member of the NAACP and the American Legion as well as advisory board member of the African American Museum in Philadelphia. She received several awards and was a guest host on a radio talk show. She passed away May 5, 2020
Dr. Ada Fisher
Physician, teacher, politician
Dr. Fisher graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a medical degree and earned a master's in public health from John's Hopkins University. She ran a rural NC health clinic and a 16 county substance abuse program. She also worked for two major Fortune 500 corporations before retiring from medicine in 2000. Dr. Fisher also taught secondary level math and science, served on the school board and the board of trustees for Barber-Scotia College. She went on to become the National Republican Committeewoman for NC, ran for US Senate three times and NC General Assembly once. She passed away October 7, 2022
Bernard Tyson
Hospital Administrator
Spurred by his mother's medical struggles, Bernard earned both his bachelor's and Masters in healthcare administration. Immediately after graduation he began working for Kaiser Permanente, where he remained for over 30 years, serving in a multitude of roles. At the time of his death in 2019, he was the chairman and CEO of one of the nation's largest healthcare providers. Credited for helping to transform the healthcare industry in areas such as technology innovations, healthcare affordability and strategic investments Tyson was also an incredibly powerful voice for corporate diversity, racial equality and affordable healthcare access. He also served on many boards, such as The Executive Leadership Council, Salesforce.com and The World Economic Forum's Future of Health.
Gregory Adams
Registered Nurse, Hospital Administrator
After obtaining his bachelor's degree in nursing, Greg began working in the emergency room at Crawford Long University in Atlanta, Ga. Here he saw the many social determinants of society and decided to pursue a master's in healthcare administration. After graduation, he would join Kaiser Permanente and eventually move up the ranks to hold multiple positions, including regional president, group president and eventually chairman and CEO following the death of Bernard Tyson. He is among one of the few African American CEO's to succeed another in a major corporation. He sits on boards for the Americas Health Insurance Plans, the Global Health and Healthcare Community and the California Hospital Association.
Machelle Allen, MD
Physician, Hospital Administrator
Machelle received her M.D. from the University of California and then pursued further training in medicine, radiology, obstetrics and gynecology and maternal and fetal medicine. Her early career focus was on women in high risk medical situations and how she could personally help as a physician. As she developed connections and gained influence, she was able to increase her role in healthcare and eventually become senior vice president and chief medical officer of NYC Health+ Hospitals. In this role she has been able to implement many service line advancements such as tele-ICU, point of care imaging and a novel pilot program in the city of New York called B-HEARD that teams social workers with EMTs on mental health calls instead of law enforcement.
